I will have a 16 foot trench drain connected to a drywell. Should I have access to this drywell?
This drywell is 10 feet in diameter and 8 feet deep. It is in my driveway (20' X 30') The trench drain is connected to it with two 4"wide X 12' long drain pipes under the ground. Only water (when it rains) and some leaves will enter this drywell. Should I have a sewer assembly in my driveway to access this or will I never need to accesss this? Also, what is the chance of methane gases forming in this mostly water/leaf drywell environment? If you are an engineer, chemist or someone knowledgeable about this I would appreciate your answer.
Yes, you are required by code to have access to the drywell in case the flow is blocked and you need to clean out the drains which lead to the drywell. Rodents can gain access to the 4" wide drain and may get stuck and die within the drain. More importantly, you will need to gain access to the drywell to clean is out occasionally since no matter carefully they are designed, they always clog and need to be cleaned from time to time. Gases due to organic decomposition are always a possibility, but I am not qualified to render an opinion as to the kind of gas that will be formed, but if animals get caught in the line, you will have methane gas forming.
The sides and base of the drywell should be perforated to allow the water to escape. The soil surrounding the drywell should be free draining and you should install a geotextile fabric around the sides and bottom of the well to prevent soil fines from migrating into the well and casuing clogs.
