Self Tapping Bolt on my oil tank?

I over torqued the bolt on my oil tank on my motorcycle. I've been advised to use a self tapping bolt or go to a shop and have them do it. Problem is the shop wants 200$ and i've never done it before. Though it does seem like a simple process. I'll probably attempt it but i'd like some advice first. If anyone is a mechanic and has done this before could you give me a step by step and let me know what to look/feel for? Thanks!

Did it strip the threads on the bolt or on the tank? Huge difference.

If it was the bolt, just get a new bolt. If it was the tank it is much harder. Some companies make oversized bolts for just such a problem. Don't know if anyone has them for this application, but there are a lot of them for automobiles and for carburetors.

There is a product called Helicoil. It is a threaded insert that goes into the bad hole. It has internal threads so you can put a bolt into it. It also might be possible to just tap the hole to the next size up and get a bolt for that newly threaded hole. Sometimes you can go from SAE to metric or visa verse to get a very small change in size. That might be enough to seal.
