Steel Types And Uses by Nadine Davis

Most tools and equipment used in homes, industries, construction projects and manufacturing are made from steel. There are many different types of steel and each one has its own characteristics. Depending on the specifications and type of steel, its specific use is decided. Some options are more expensive than others. Some steel types are suited to certain tools while others are more appropriate for others. Some tools are manufactured from more than one type of steel. Common steel types are Carbon Steel, cobalt steel, high speed steel, nickel chromium steel, aluminum steel and stainless steel.

Carbon Steel -

This can be classified into high carbon steel or medium carbon steel depending on the constituency of the carbon content that is present in it. High carbon steel comprises of more carbon and less iron. It is the most common steel type and is generally used in making wood cutting tools, axes and scissors. Low or medium carbon steel has more iron and less carbon. This is ideal for manufacturing tool frames, springs, vehicle frames and boxes.

Stainless Steel -

Compared to carbon steel, this is more costly and is not usually used for creating tools. Products made from stainless steel are seem to have longer lasting surfaces than carbon steel. This quality in stainless steel helps in preventing breakage even in tough applications. Stainless steel has high resistance to rust and corrosion as compared to any other steel type. It is generally used in making kitchen utensils, cutlery, crockery and surgical instruments.

High Speed Steel -

This is toughest and most rigid of all steel types and is very effective in cutting metals. It is mainly used in making drills, end mills, power saws and certain tools. It is available in many grades and each one is chosen for the particular requirements.

Cobalt Steel -

This has similar characteristics as high speed steel and is excellent for drilling machines. Tools made from cobalt steel are slightly brownish in color.

Nickel Chromium Steel -

This is a type of steel which is very strong and is shock resistant. Armor plate creation usually utilizes this kind of steel.

Aluminum Steel -

Not only is this a very smooth steel, but this also has a high content of aluminum. Its smoothness and durability are the characteristics which make it the best choice for the production of furniture.

Steel is basically a combination of iron and carbon but may have presence of other materials such as cobalt, chromium, aluminum and nickel for making it suitable for certain applications.
