Why was the fight @ Little Round Top important to the Battle of Gettysburg?
Cannot find a clear explanation of this anywhere.
Because of the round tops themselves. Both Little Round Top and Big Round Top were hills that offered a commanding presence over the entire battlefield. From the top Union forces were able to observe the movements of the Confederates during the battle. But at the same time, Confederate forces, particularly Lee himself, realized that if they gained control of the hills they could then place cannon atop them and fire down on the Union lines from behind. This would have forced Meade to either sacrifice men trying to clear Confederate artillery off the round tops or to retreat from his position, giving the high ground up to the Confederates.
Controlling the high ground was often quite important during the war. First it offered commanders a chance to better view enemy troop movements so as to be able to properly respond rather than being surprised when an enemy appear at an unexpected time. Remember that when you're on the same plane as your opponent you can only see so far. So when your dealing with a battlefield that's covering hundreds of yards or better you're line of sight is going to be limited. So you may miss certain troop movements. But as you start going up in elevation you can start increasing how far away you can see.
Second, attacking forces have to climb the high ground to get at you, which can wear them down a little and gives you the chance to pick them off while not exhausting yourself. Have you ever played King of the Mountain (might also be called King of the Hill in some places)? Something I used to love as a kid, we'd pick a hill that had at least one steep side (didn't matter how tall the hill was exactly, but it had to at least be something folks had to take several steps to climb just to reach the king). Then one person got to be the King of the Mountain while the rest of us tried to climb up and throw them down and whoever managed it got to be the next king with everyone going back down to the start before the game began again. Running up the hill put those trying to take down the king at a disadvantage because they were on an angle and were being worn down by climbing the hill. But the king had the advantages of being able to more easily shove folks back down the hill and not being winded. And that's what it was like for those defending the high ground during the war. They had all the advantages and unlike the game they could dig in.
Three, artillery rangescould be increased. The high ground does not actually mean the cannon itself fires farther, rather it's a bit more like a lighthouse's light. At sea level the light might only travel maybe a few hundred feet to a mile out to sea. But as the elevation of the light increases the light then shines miles out to sea with the proper lens in place. For instance, on a clear night the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, which has it's light at 191 feet above the ground, shines 20 miles out to sea (especially favorable conditions can increase that distance to an astonishing 51 miles). Artillery pieces firing on the same angle will technically fire a round the same distance. But the elevation upon which one is set can actually increase the distance the shell travels because the shell is being given a little extra time in the air.
It was these reasons that made the round tops important to the battle and which made the fight over the control of Little Round Top in particular very important. Control Little Round Top and either Lee or Meade would control both.
