While not all rooms are suited for crown moldings, those that are can pose a challenge to the decorator or do it yourself re-modeler. There are a few decisions that need to be made, as well as measurements to be taken into consideration. These include:

This gives a professional, finished look to the trim work, even if the cuts were not exactly lined up perfectly.
The top layers of crown moldings are generally carved in designs that can be simple or very complex, depending on your tastes. The look of these pieces is important, since this is what will be visible when the work is done. The bottom layers will be covered for the most part, but the top is where the real design element comes into play.
For high ceilings or long narrow rooms, crown moldings can give that touch of elegance that regular trim doesn't quite convey. Once installed, the room will have a finished look that may inspire you to move on to other rooms that you may have been putting off, while trying to decide what to do with them. It can make a narrow room seem wider, or add a formal touch to the rooms with high ceilings.
It can be difficult to install crown moldings yourselfâ"but certainly not impossible. It's a good idea to have at least one other person there to help, unless the pieces are relatively short, or you have a lot of experience installing trim. If you have to do it yourself, use lengths of lumber to help brace the pieces as you install them and use all safety precautions you would observe performing any home improvement project. With that in mind, when ordering your pieces, add a bit extra for mistakes that can and do happen while working on any project of this nature.
Choosing the right style when selecting crown moldings can make or break the look you want to achieve. The style of the home should be taken into account and followed as closely as possible to avoid clashing with all the other trim in the room.
