1. CFL's have a higher initial cost.

2. CFL's do not work well in places where the light is switched on and off frequently. The life span of the bulb is reduced in these situations.

3. Not all CFL' can be used with dimmer switches. Special bulbs are required for this application. Again the life of the bulb will be shortened.

4. Some timer mechanisms are incompatible with CFL's.

5. Not all bulbs are suitable for outdoor use. Low temperatures may reduce light levels.

6. CFL's contain a small amount of mercury which is toxic. Mercury vapor can be released if the bulb is broken.

7. Bulbs of inferior quality are showing up on the store shelves and may not be of high quality and will not last as long.

Despite the negatives, CFL's have become extremely popular in the last several years.

Replacing one 60 watt standard bulb with a 15-w CFL will save you more than $40 in electricity costs over the life of the bulb if you use it 6 hours a day. Add to that less trips to the store, and less money spent on replacement bulbs, the savings are significant.

Multiply that times the number of light bulbs you have in your home and you could realize a significant savings in both money and energy consumption.

Some states require that burned out CFL's be disposed of at a hazardous waste facility (the preferred method of disposal) while most municipalities allow them to be disposed of in regular trash. Stores like Home Depot and Ikea are offering easy recycling for CFL's.

CFL's do contain a small amount of mercury and opponents to these bulb cite that as a major drawback. You just need to remember that these type bulbs should never be incinerated. This will disperse the mercury into the atmosphere.

Help with LED bulbs / tubes?

So, I've been wanting to replace the lights in my home with LED lights for awhile now, and I just heard about LED light bulbs and LED tubes that slot straight into the current lamps/fluorescent fixtures that you have. But what about the LED driver/controller? I remember you need one of them to drive your LED light because I built a DIY aquarium LED lamp.

So do those LED bulbs/tubes need an LED controller? If not, then why not? Thanks.

Yes LED bulbs have the same lamp bases as your standard halogen bulbs. For example you can get GU10 LED bulbs, MR16 LED Bulbs and for the tubes you can get T8 LED Tubes which will all fit in you standard fixtures.

The majority of LED bulbs have been made for compatibility with standard light fittings and hence are said to be Retro-fitting.

LED drivers are used for Low voltage LED bulbs such that need to be run of a 12V supply and not the usual mains supply of 240V. LED drivers are used to replace a transformer or be put in if there is no transformer at all. So the LED bulbs you will need a LED driver for is the G5.3/MR16 LED bulbs. The Gu10 LED bulbs dont require a driver as they run of the mains.

However, if you already have a transformer and want to save a little money (LED drivers cost around £6-10), you don't really need to purchase a LED driver, however it is recommended you do.
