Thermodynamics 101: The Four Main Parts of an Air Cooled Heat Exchanger by Heather Fin

Most of us are not yet familiar with the different kinds of heat exchangers. Perhaps this is because they are more commonly used in factories than in residential spaces. The air cooled heat exchanger is one of those barely seen cooling devices yet are heavily used in a variety of large-scale industries.

For the untrained eye, an air cooled heat exchanger may look like complex machinery due to its huge build. However, if the unit is dissected, the processes that take place inside it can be easily understood. Here are the main components of an aircooler as seen in many industrial applications:

†Tube Bundles †These are nothing but a series of tubes in which the hot fluid flows through. If you are familiar with the shell-and-tube heat exchangers, you might have noticed that they look exactly like these tubesâ€"only inside a header and not in a single pressure vessel. The tubes are often designed with fins that act as extended surface areas for flowing liquid. The fins can be helical or plate type, with the choice often dependent on the preferred heat transfer rate and pressure drop. It is said that in order to run an economical aircooler, the tube bundles must be longer than the ordinary kinds.

†Blower or Fan †As an aircooler, it should include an air-moving device in order to drive the air into the outer surface of the tube bundles. It can be made of steel, wood and other similar construction materials. The diameter and number of blades may vary depending on the aircooler’s capacity. Usually, there are two fans attached to the draft to increase the cooling rate of at least two sets of bundles. Most of the aircoolers have also included pitch fans that are either automatic or manually adjustable. These fans assist in the temperature control and energy conservation.

†Motor Assembly †A blower or fan cannot be run without the use of engine to propell its blades. The most popular motor assembly for aircoolers is the one that is electrically powered. Unlike the hydraulic and gas-powered motors, the electric motor is more efficient and inexpensive.

†Plenum †In an induced draft, this mechanism is located just above the tube bundle. However, in a forced draft, the plenum is situated below the series of tubes. The plenums of these two drafts are designed according to the structure of the aircooler: slopesided for induced and boxed type for the forced. No matter how different they look in each draft, the purpose is the same for both which is to assist in the smooth flow of air.

All the four aforementioned components can be found in both induced and forced drafts. To make it clear, there are only some differences in the overall structure and processes of the two. The design of the induced draft may be a bit complicated as compared to the forced draft. In an induced draft, it is quite hard to access the fans and bundles for cleaning and tune-ups, which is in contrary with the forced draft.
