How to install a heavyweight barn beam as a Fireplace Mantel?
I have received an old hand hewn barn beam of white oak I want to attach to studded drywall above a gas fireplace. The beam is 10" x 6" x 6' and weighs in excess of 135lbs.What would be a good way to anchor this to the wall with preferrably nothing showing? The weight, obviously concerns me. I plan on using a stone veneer around the mantel once it is installed.
My answer assumes you , like me, want to sleep at night so over kill is the way to go.
1. Open the dry wall behind and above where your placing the mantel. Don't be afraid to make it a little big--a patch is a patch. Measure the drywall thickness (1/2 or 5/8").
2. Go to the lumber yard and pick up drywall, 1 1/4" drywall screws, drywall compound, Five 5" and Five 4" lag screws 1/2" round with washers. Plus, one 8' 2x8 piece if lumber.
3. cut the 2x8, 6" smaller than the beam, center it, and lag it to the beam so that it is parallel with the top of the beam and 2" higher.
4. Using a level, mark out and cut a notch in the existing studs so that the 2x8 fits in flush with the outside of the studs and can be drywalled over. I find going 1/8" bigger all around for the notch works best.
5. Lag (4") 2" lip into studs. Drywall.
Extra credit: Add Two perpendicular 2x4 braces from just above the beam to the outside wall behind the fireplace.
