The specific qualities of industrial pipe flanges by Gen Federico

In industries like the petrochemical, gas and oil industries, it is important that the alloys used for the pipe flanges and other fittings meet specific requirements. Depending on their location, and the use to which they will be put, fittings must be strong, and resistant to corrosion, stress, impact, the effects of welding and extremes of pressure and temperature.

For example, stainless steel pipe flanges used for undersea pipelines must be resistant to the corrosive effects of salt water, and must not warp or buckle at extreme depths where temperatures are low and pressures high. Oil refineries need to be sure their pipe flanges are easily welded but desensitised to welding (i.e. that the chromium giving them their anti-corrosion abilities remains active when heat is applied), that they are resistant to high internal pressures, and that they will not perform poorly in extreme weather or when exposed to fire conditions.

All this means the alloys used for industrial pipe flanges have to be of very high specification. Stainless steel alloys are generally one of two types: ferritic and austenitic. Ferritic alloys have high strength but are hard to weld, and possess low resistance to corrosion (improved by high levels of chromium and added elements like titanium and molybdenum.)

Austenitic alloys have a different crystalline structure, which is stabilised with the addition of nickel. This gives them impressive anti-corrosion abilities and makes them easy to weld, but they have less strength than ferritic alloys.

Is it possible to use an existing gas pipe to run drinking water through?

Will be getting a corgi registered fitter to install a new cooker, but the old gas pipe runs exactly where we need a water pipe and goes past the sink. Can we leave the pipe in place and connect to water supply or is it a different type of pipe?

MAN! The answers these people come up with is incredible! First off, DO NOT USE THE OLD GAS PIPE FOR DRINKING WATER! Older houses did have galvanized pipes installed for gas, but now it is unacceptable to use. Now we use black steel pipe. Copper pipes were also used, but it also, is unacceptable to use. You would "taste" the gas in your water,if you used the old pipe, that is why you don't want to use it. If the old gas pipe is disconnected, remove it, and depending on the type pipe that is acceptable in your city, install that pipe in the holes that are existing. If you decide to use copper pipe, and your service is galvanized pipe, you need a dielectric coupling, or union, to transition between the 2 dissimilar metals. Make sure, that you put the union in an accessible location, and not inside the wall. Which ever type pipe you decide to use, make sure, that if it is in an exterior wall, you insulate the water pipes, to keep them from freezing. Good luck!
