Shortcuts for Raising Emus Number 3 - Pen Facilities and More by Ray Magness

Your pen facilities can make a HUGE difference in the work load on your emu ranch. If your pens are properly built and configured in the beginning, many headaches will be avoided in the future for you AND your emus!

Properly built emu pens average one acre and will comfortably hold 40 birds. There needs to be shade available to the birds and shelter from cold winds. Usually a shed that is 24’ x 8’ is plenty because they won’t all use it at the same time. Half of the north side (12’) needs a wall that is open along the top (about 18â€). This is for ventilation in the summer and to protect from wind in the winter. Emus are hardy animals and do well in cold weather, but the windblock does need to be available should they want it, and some will.

A MAJOR shortcut and money-saver

Pen fencing can get expensive but there are some shortcuts. Emu fences need to be six feet high. Emus RARELY get out of a fence that is six feet. If one is running at full speed and hits a fence at an extreme angle its possible for the bird to go over, but it is SO rare that major, expensive changes in the fencing isn’t necessary.

Regular 2†x 4†x 6’ horse-wire is widely used, but expensive, and the rolls are only 100 feet so lots of splicing is required. Field wire comes in 330 foot rolls. but costs about the same as 100 feet of horse-wire. It is only 47†high, but two rolls can be overlapped (one at the top and one at the bottom), and the cost is still WAY less. You can use 8 foot â€T†posts that are two feet in the ground and six feet tall. Hang field wire along the bottom, clearing the ground by six inches or so, then overlap the middle by hanging a second roll along the top. Clip the two rolls together with inexpensive, easy to use, galvanized hog rings.

This way, you can use two rolls of field wire and get 330 of fence for the same cost as 200 feet of horse-wire and only 200 feet of fence. It isn’t real difficult to cut the field wire in half (lengthwise) and use half along the upper part of the fence (above the 47†bottom part) and you’ll have a half left over for another 330 feet of fencing. This way, you’ll get 660 feet of fence (using three rolls) for the same cost as three rolls of horse-wire and 300 feet of fence . . . two times the fencing for the same cost.

A Major Shortcut for Your Gates

Economical, Sturdy, lightweight gates can be made from bull-panels at a very reasonable cost. Bull panels are 52†x 16’, and made from welded wire. It’s about the size of a pencil, maybe slightlysmaller. You’ll need to weld with a wire welder but they are so affordable nowadays that onewould pay for itself in no time and they are VERY easy to weld with. Search it out online.

Use a frame of chain-link fencing top-rail and weld the bull panel to it. Chain link fencing hinges can be welded and you have a long-lasting custom-built gate. A gate of this nature is plenty strong enough for emus and will hang properly without sagging over time. It’s a good idea to install a Lag Bolt to use as a pin for the gate to rest on while in the closed position. You can do this even if you want your gate to swing both ways. Its more trouble, but well worth it in the long run.

Fence Posts

All corner posts and gate posts need to be treated wood, not metal. Wood is much better to work with and repairs and changes are much more doable. Use longer posts or poles (14’ to 16’) for gates and stretch a wire across the top. This way, braces on each side of the gate aren’t required. Do this AFTER the fence is built. When you decide where the gate will go, set the posts or poles, staple the wire to them on both sides, and cut the middle away.

When setting posts for emu pens, be sure not to add concrete (sack-concrete) to ground level. Emus walk the fence constantly and the concrete WILL become exposed. Stop about 8 to 10 inches below ground level.

A Major Shortcut For Moving Emus From Pen To Pen

Moving emus from pen to pen is a never ending task on the emu ranch. It can be extremely stressful to the birds (and you), depending on the weather, but it isn’t necessary. You’ll need a couple of panels which can be made just like your gates. When you need to move birds from one pen to another, temporarily fasten a panel to each gate post (with wire) and leave the middle about eighteeninches apart. Make the â€funnel†go into the pen you want the birds to go to.

Take the feed and water out of the pen the birds are in and put it near the funnel opening in the penyou want the birds to go to. The birds will walk thru the funnel and can’t figure out how to get back. It’s the same basic concept as a fish trap, but for emus. After a day or so, all the birds will have moved themselves and nobody is stressed! If you have a stubborn bird or two, put the opening of the funnel closer (so the birds don’t filter back) and leave it. You can use metal rods in the ground at the baseof each panel and the upper part will easily push apart and come back together. They’ll push it apart and move before long. They can smell the water. That’s their desert characteristic.

Again, shortcuts make it better for the rancher AND the birds!

What size lag screws are used to fasten a 4 X 4 post to a post bracket?

The post bracket is embedded in the concrete pier, and there are 4 holes in the metal bracket for fastening lag screws to the post. What diameter and length would be used? Are galvanized lag screws strong enough?

Measure the diameter of the larger holes.
Purchase hex head galvanized lag screws with a slightly smaller diameter than the holes and about 1+1/2" long. Also purchase 4 galvanized washers per post.
Drill a pilot hole about 1/8" less in diameter than the lag screw. Plumb and brace post, drill pilot hole,insert lag screw (with washer),tighten with wrench.
Always leave temporary post braces in place until you have the structure finished.
I also like to spray paint the metal brackets a color to blend in with the wood structure and the lag screws. It gives the structure a finished look.
*You cannot use too long of a lag screw or the screws will be in the same path as each other. Small screws may not be strong enough if you use them only as your structure, like many others, may be subjected to upload stress from wind,storms.
