Anyone have information/advice for using fiberglass cloth and resin?
For a costume, I plan on making durable, hard hooves. Many people have suggested using fibercloss coated with polyester resin as a layer on top of foam that is coated with Plaster of Paris.
So, I've Never Used fiberglass coth or resin before, and I don't intend to use it except for this project.
Where can I get it from?
How much does it cost?
I'm sure I need goggles and gloves. A respirtory mask?
Can I paint it?
These questions sound dumb, but honestly I've never heard of this stuff until it was suggested.
My suggestion would be to *not* use a resin (a polyester resin in this case)... it's kinda fiddly if you're not famliar with using it, does definitely require ventilation and takes awhile to cure, as well as other things that might be more trouble than you're looking for.
Instead I'd recommend a form of papier mache since the result is fairly lightweight, and can be made very strong after drying.
Depending on the size and shape of the hooves, you could make an armature first from wire mesh of some kind (it comes in degrees from very stiff to almost drapable), or just find or make a removable form from cardboard tubes, newspaper wapped with masking tape, etc. (...if you use a form, drape a piece of plastic wrap or aluminum foil over the form to allow it to release easily after drying if needed).
On top of the wire mesh or form, you can do the traditional thing of laying strips of newspaper soaked in diluted White Glue (like Elmers GlueAll), or better, you can make the process go a lot faster by using those blue shop towels that come on a roll in automotive depts... they're thick, but very drapable, and once done will be strong.
To increase the strength and ridigity even more, add more layers of glue or polyurethane after drying (or more layers of towels).
If you then need to smooth the hooves out, you can sand before adding any final coats, or you can cover the whole thing with something like Creative Paperclay as a top coat (or use Celluclay which is cheaper, then sand that smooth).
You could also use plaster gauze strips (the kind used for making masks, etc., from the craft store) over an armature or a form, but that will definitely require sanding. It will dry to the touch faster than any of the other options discussed though. After drying, it can also be reinforced with polyurethane or diluted glue.
I wouldn't use plain plaster btw because although it's hard, it's brittle and will break easily in where it's thin.
Any of the options can be painted over with permanent paints (spray or brush on) or with non-permanent paints like tempera (you'd have to seal the tempera if you wanted it to be permanent. Once you have painted it, you can seal to add gloss or more strength, or not ( white glue diluted with water 3-4 to 1, or polyurethane from the hardware store, are easiest).
