Beat The Chills And Save On Your Bills by D Collins

With the credit crunch in full swing, one of the main areas that is worrying people the most is that of energy prices. With predictions of a cold winter, many will be wondering how they can bring down their bills but still shelter themselves from the chilly weather.

As a result, more of us are turning to renewable energy sources in a bid to save money. Products such as energy saving lightbulbs, dryer balls and low temperature washing liquids have seen an increase in sales as we bid to reduce our costs.

With the Government’s recent announcement of aid for low income families to make their homes more energy efficient, the rising price of oil and gas has meant many are now facing higher electricity bills. And with winter setting in, ensuring your home is heated is vital for your health and general well being.

So what can you do to help reduce the costs of your utilities bill? Here are a few handy hints for getting you through the winter months:

Examine your boiler and ensure that it’s correctly maintained. If you believe that your boiler needs replacing or maintaining, contact your energy company immediately and arrange for an engineer to assess and fit a new boiler.
If your current home heating system is compatible with a combi-boiler it can be worth investing in one. These boilers will help to provide heat throughout the house, but also produce less CO2 emissions, which can help towards cheap gas and electricity prices as well as reducing your carbon footprint.
Examine your insulation †being sure to check your loft and replacing if necessary. It can also be worth looking into cavity wall insulation in order to reduce heat loss during those cold winter months.
Take steps to minimize heat loss, even small purchases such as draught-proofing can help save you money and ensure you don’t lose valuable heat.
Be careful with your appliances: try to switch off appliances after use rather than leave them on standby, this will help you to save money on your electricity bills.
Invest in some double glazing in order to help conserve heat around the property and therefore save money on heating bills. Even closing curtains at night time can help reduce heat loss.
When purchasing new appliances, look for the Energy Saving logo, these are usually tailored to reduce emissions and work more efficiently at lower temperatures.

By paying a little more attention to how much you use appliances and taking just the smallest of steps †such as purchasing a draught excluder or ensuring you turn the TV off after use †you can save yourself some money on your bills and help keep your property warm during the cold winter months.
