The advantage to using a bookcase is that it hides the purpose of that section of wall better, and already involves lots of layers and seams, one of which is actually for the door.

The disadvantage of the bookcase is that it makes the door weigh a lot, requiring fancy hinges and/or support wheels.

I suggest you look online for plans and ideas. If all you can find is bookcases, don't worry. Adapt their plans to allow you to make a flat one without shelves - will likely be easier than with shelves.

You may need to improvise the latch... you might get really fancy and have a completely hidden one which works with a magnet, or maybe have a candle sconce to pull, etc. - Another advantage of the shelves, is that it is easier to hide the latch mechanism next to a book, or maybe by pulling on a certain book...
