Have you ever heard of using plastic-coated galvanized wire for deck railing instead of stainless?

A guy working on our deck is suggesting a cable railing system, and the cost is pretty low. He's talking about using plastic/Vinyl Coated galvanized wire and off-the-shelf turnbuckles instead of stainless steel, which is what I've usually seen used.

Have you ever heard of using galvanized? Have you seen it? How do you think it would look? (Would it make people say, "Oh, look, they couldn't afford to do it right with stainless?")

In general, what do you think of the idea?

I don't know the code by you. Check with your local building inspector.

But by me the code for a railing of anything over 24" off the ground requires that "a sphere with a 4" diameter can not fit between the rails" You better make sure those cables are pretty tight! If a child CAN put their head in there they will!

I think the cable would look fine, but what matters is what do YOU think it will look like. It is YOUR house. As far as off the shelf turn buckles, if they are not galvanized or stainless they will rust and look like crap (or at least the color).

You usually get what you pay for.
