The list of common chemical ingredients of "tan accelerators" include Tyrosine, which is an amino acid (what Melanin is made out of) that is produced by the Melanocyte cells in the skin. And Tyrosine is still Tyrosine regardless whether your skin produces it through indoor or outdoor UV light exposure. Therefore, I would still recommend to minimize your UVR (UV radiation) exposure. And please take the precautionary action of applying a high SPF sunscreen or sunblock, letting it completely soak it for a good 15 minutes, before UVR exposure. There is not a single sunscreen/sunblock that can possibly prevent tanning, so you don't have to worry about "not tanning."
I'm not sure what you mean by "how long does it last?" If you're referring to how long a tan lasts, I can help answer that aspect of the question. Here's how the physiology of the tanning process goes:
A tan occurs in the Epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin that is on top of the Dermis layer. We, humans, all have about 5 million of the Melanocytes. Our DNA determines how much pigment our Melanocytes can produce. It is these Melanocytes that are responsible for releasing Melanosomes whenever UV light waves touches them. This produces a tan in the skin.
In the tanning process, it involves 2 layers of the Epidermis: the outermost layer, Keratinocytes, and the inner base layer, called Melanocytes. The Melanocytes produce Melanin (the dark pigmentation) when oxidized by UV light waves. Melanin is made up of a type of amino acid called Tyrosine. And these Melanocytes have spider-y shaped arms that extend to all of the Keratinocytes in the Basale layer. It is through these arms that the Melanin is transported to the Keratinocytes. Then these Melanins are accumulated on the surface of each Keratinocyte to create a shield around its nucleus.
Our skin cells renewal cycle varies from 4 - 6 weeks, depending upon your age: the younger you are, the less time it takes for new skin cells to push through to the top and push off the dead skin cells, probably 28-30 days. This is just the skin's natural way of exfoliation on its own. However, any manual (through using loofah or shower pouf, with or without "microbeads," as well as shaving) or chemical (using AHA or BHA lotions and creams) exfoliation done on your part will speed up the cellular replacement. Therefore, if you don't continually use the tanning beds, the tan will last you about 4 - 6 weeks.
NOTE
If you want to achieve the "bronze" look, select a lotion that contains a bronzer ingredient, such as:
----Tingleplex 40 Tingle and Reddening Factor (in Swedish Beauty's ingredient list; it gives an immediate "after tan" glow)
----DHA (gives a delayed color that's noticeable within 12-24 hours)
----Biotanning Complex (a Melanin booster for darkest color that lasts 5-8 days)
