Hi,
A brass washer is to be fit in place over a copper bolt. Both species of metal are at 20.8° C. The diameter of the bolt is 1.6510 cm & the inner diameter of the washer is 1.6440 cm. The brass washer & copper bolt are both raised to the same temperature. At what temperature will the washer fit on the bolt?

Copper bolt = 16.6 * 10^-6 /°K
Brass washer = 18.7 * 10^-6/°K

Area = π * r^2
For copper bolt:
r = 1.6510 ÷ 2 = 0.8255 cm
Ao = π * (0.8255)^2
α = 16.6 * 10^-6
Area = π * (0.8255)^2 * (1 + 16.6 * 10^-6 * 2 * ∆T)
For Brass washer:
r = 1.6440 ÷ 2 = 0.822 cm
Ao = π * (0.822)^2
α = 18.7 * 10^-6
Area = π * (0.822)^2 * (1 + 18.7 * 10^-6 * 2 * ∆T)
These 2 areas must be equal for the washer to fit snuggly on the bolt
π * (0.8255)^2 * (1 + 16.6 * 10^-6 * 2 * ∆T) = π * (0.822)^2 * (1 + 18.7 * 10^-6 * 2 * ∆T)
Solve for ∆T
Final temperature = 20.8 + ∆T
