Aluminum forging consists of different grade of aluminum. Each grade is used for manufacture of parts for different uses in various industries. The aircraft industry uses Aluminum 2014 for structure of their airplanes. Truck frames are also constructed using Aluminum grade 2014. Higher-grade airships and aerospace applications employ a grade of aluminum know as Aluminum 7075 because of its superior strength. Aluminum 6061 is the grade most often used because it is abundantly available. It is very resistant to corrosion, extremely malleable when heat-treated, and lightweight, yet strong. Used in most industries for manufacturing automobile parts, fittings, general use in structural applications, wiring and more.
Brass Forging items are what you might commonly see in the bathroom fixtures or accessories in your home. Fittings are usually made from brass because this metal has a relatively low melting point, which makes it very malleable and easy to cast. Many mechanical components are made from brass that has been forged to specification. Specialty items, along with many musical instruments are made from forged brass, also. It is used often in decorative fixtures because it has a "gold" look finish and is cosmetically pleasing to the eye. Check out the horns, cymbals and bells used in any orchestra. These are all brass, or brass plated items.
The forging process, whether it be Brass Forging or Aluminum forging requires the metal to be heated to the point where it is soft and malleable enough to be shaped into whatever is required. This is done by heating the metal to a temperature of about 900 degrees, just short of liquefying, and then using precision machines to form the finished product by means of die forging. The result is a perfectly formed finished product. The parts are then trimmed to specification, heat-treated, washed and finished according to needs. Some machining might be needed before the finished product is polished and shipped to the customer.
It is hard to imagine a world where forged products were not available. Without the process of Aluminum forging we wouldn't have a vehicle to drive, airplanes would not be able to fly, the space program would be virtually non-existent, and construction would come to a halt. Yet we take little notice of the aluminum products that surround us everyday. Think about it the next time you drink a soda from an aluminum can, or use aluminum foil to wrap those leftovers!
