if quick release was invented by campanolgo in 1922, why isnt it more widespread?
i dont mean on the downhill bikes with 20 mm thru-axles, maxles, and thru bolts. i mean on things like the crappy wal mart bikes, some med level road bikes still have bolts.
why hasnt it been made into larger diameters for the thru bolt bikes?
it just makes everything so much easier.
the axles on cheap bikes are made of hi-ten steel which is weak compared to cro-mo on better bikes so you loose the strength when you drill out the hi-ten steel alxe for QR. if you drilled one out then installed the QR you'd see it flex thus overloading the bearings and crush them in a short time also because the axle will be bent it will snap in the middle. the large diameter of the thru axle would require a large hollow QR which adds wieght and on the DH bikes the last thing you want is the QR to come loose when your flyin dwn hill. so to save weight and have security they are bolted. the QR is wide spread look at most every mtb road hybrid etc that costs over 350.00$ it has QR's.
