Door ironmongery has been around from the time iron was known. In olden days ironmongery was referred to as the place selling ironware. As time has moved on ironmongery was referred to as joinery where products are made from iron including iron door and window, iron fittings for buildings such as t hinge (tee hinge), lock, latch, handle, knob, etc.

The fundamental factor is that different applications require different types of hinges, for example the hinge you use for the doors will not suit cupboards and the storage box hinge is different from the hinge design used for cabinets. Therefore, you will need to know what kind of hinge to use for a particular purpose, it could be for the bathroom door, kitchen cabinets, doors, windows, etc; there are a variety of hinges to choose from and the following will be of some help:
â Butt Hinge: Are the most common type of hinges, often used for wooden, hanging doors, cupboards and other furniture.
â Butterfly Hinge: are pretty similar to butt hinges but they bear a different design and they resemble the shape of a butterfly and are supposedly not as strong as butt hinges and are therefore used on lighter furniture.
â Barrel Hinge: this hinge is held by a pivot and is equipped with a hollow cylindrical section for the application of a rotational bearing force.
â Tee Hinge/T Hinge: this hinge is very similar to a strap hinge and got its name because when opened it looks like the letter âTâ hence t hinge/tee hinge. These are mostly used for sheds and are not very secure as the screws are exposed.
â Concealed Hinge: most commonly used for cupboards as they are not visible from the outside.
â Piano Hinge: also known as continuous hinge and they get their name as they are mostly used to secure piano lids.
â Flush Hinge: in comparison to butt hinges they are lighter in weight and can be directly fitted to the surface without having to cut a recess.
â Double Action Hinge: the most common place to find this type of hinge is in a commercial property and are used for swinging doors.
â Friction Hinge: these are used for double glazed windows and before buying you need to check if it is suitable for your window due to the different manufacturing designs of friction hinges.
Apart from the above mentioned hinges you can also find gate hinges, strap hinges, H hinges, security hinge, spring hinge etc. Based on each application you can choose the suitable hinge for residential or commercial purposes.
