HID Kits and Advantages by sal

HID stands for high intensity discharge. Instead of a filament, HID light bulbs are filled with xenon gas. When high voltage is applied, the gas ignites to produce an arc of light. Compared to a standard Halogen Bulb, the HID bulbs put out three times as much light. The gas also glows at a higher color temperature, producing the distinct color of the light kit. The higher the color temperature, the more color the light will have.

HID kits refer to the system structure that holds the high intensity discharge components. It generally contains the ballast, the holders and wires. A kit stands to provide the back end support for entire lighting solution that an automobile use. To use such lights in your car, you must first install the kit system. The kit uses different working mechanism, which is only suitable for high intensity discharges.

An HID kit will come with two bulbs; two ballasts (igniters) and the wiring required installing the kit. HID bulbs require over 20,000 volts to ignite the gas and the ballasts are equipped with very high quality voltage lines to accomplish this. The ballast will ignite the gas so the bulb can emit light. Once the bulbs are lit, they only require 85 watts to stay lit.

The xenon kit contains all the necessary parts you need to change your halogen light to xenon light. You get two xenon bulbs, a dual or two single counterbalances, connectors and wiring to replace the halogen light, and a user manual with a guide. The user manual contains all the information about the kits and the guide provides step-by-step instructions to install the HID kit in your car.

HID lamps or High Intensity Discharge lamps are much brighter than the conventional halogen lamps. They offer superior lighting that is more within the spectrum of visible light and hence is more helpful for the human eye. Since they are brighter and offer almost three times the light as compared to conventional lights, they are the best options while driving at night or in rains. They provide a clear and bright view of the object making driving a safe option. Apart from the brightness, these lamps also add to the car's overall appearance; they can easily make the car look classy. HID lights are more energy efficient and produce light that can be used by the human eye. Another advantage is they consume less energy than regular halogen headlights; they practically last for four to five times than the conventional lamps. Why don't my flourescent light bulbs light up completely, but instead emit a faint glow?

They're the big long tube type of bulbs that connect with two short metal rods on each side of the bulb (40 watt). Do I most likely need to replace the "ballasts"? If in a rented place, is it usually the landlord that deals with ballasts replacement?

A blackened end usually means a bad bulb.

And most ballasts are self starting these days, no separate starter (electronic). So it could be a bad ballast and yes that would be the landlords responsibility. But I have purchased the four foot double shop fixtures for $20 on sale and the ballasts are all the same.
