Why does my kawasaki zx600r run great until I hit 5 or 6 gear?
when I get on it hard it runs great until I hit 5 or 6 gear. It falls on it's face like there is no gas going to it. I just had the carbs cleaned and sync'd by a reputable shop, thinking it would fix the problem, but it didn't. it starts and idles absolutly perfect with no hesitations. I can rev it all the way up and it never acts like there is no gas, it just happens when I'm on the road. It won't run good at 70 miles an hour either, it just falls on it's face. If your bike will wind freely through the lower gears, it is almost certainly a fuel-delivery problem (assuming the bike is in otherwise good condition). I'm also assuming that the shop that worked on your carbs knew what they were doing (not always the case )
The carbs store enough fuel in the float bowls to handle the demand for a few seconds, but for some reason they are not being refilled at a rapid enough rate to sustain the acceleration demand over time. At a steady highway speed, the constant demand may also be enough to run them low. If backing off the throttle without shifting down, letting the bike slow to 45 or 50, seems to help, this may be the case.
If the problem always occured at a certain RPM I would suspect ignition advance issues, but since that's not the case I'll guess fuel delivery to the carb bowls. The jets are fine and clear since it runs well (for a little while) at all speeds and loads.
The problem could be several things, I've listed them in order of what I would think most likely:
1. Clogged fuel strainer in the tank/petcock. Most fuel petcocks have a mesh strainer built in. Empty and remove your tank, take out the petcock, and do whatever disassembly is necessary to be certain that the strainer, as well as all passages, are clear and free of dirt, rust particles, or other crud. Clean EVERYTHING really well. If it's 1/2 blocked, your carbs may run low.
2. Clogged inline fuel filter. If you have one of these, replace it. Or, you can just bypass around it to test.
3. Fuel lines too small - this only applies if you or a prior owner replaced the fuel lines with tubing of too small a bore diameter.
4. Blocked fuel passages or float valves in the carbs. Did the dealer really disassemble/clean/soak everything, or did they just remove and clean the low- and high-speed jets?
5. Plugged tank vent - newer bikes have a secondary tube that vents air into the gas tank to replace fuel that is used. Sometimes this vent tube gets mashed flat under the tank. Other (older) designs use a small vent hole in the gas cap. In either case, if air can't get in as fuel goes out, a vacuum can form that tries to keep fuel from draining down the lines to the carbs. This is easy to troubleshoot, just try the bike with the gas cap open (stuff a rag in so you don't get sloshed). If it runs OK with the cap open, you have a plugged vent.
